The 2017 Academy Awards was an unprecedented one with multiple nominations of Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea. The film was made by Amazon Studios. This is the first time a company like Amazon, which is associated with both delivery and streaming services.

We often see changes in media distribution as well as platforms as time passes. These changes come naturally as not only technology develops but also society. Streaming websites are becoming a dominate force in the media industry. Potentially, this change means a shift in power for the production of Hollywood films. While Hollywood has stood the test of time with major production companies it does seem to be a possibility these streaming companies involvement with feature filmmaking may mean a new era and industry norms.
Most recently, Netflix had purchased the rights to Martin Scorsese’s new film currently titled “The Irishman.” The film is said to star Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. With the release of a film bound to have such massive public appraisal, it is likely this will be the determining factor into the success of this new era of production.
