What people believe has always been an issue when it comes to journalism and it doesn’t really help when we often see stories that aren’t true. Of course there are the people that are aware of what’s going on in the world around them and knows when something on the news is false. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of people that aren’t so aware of what’s going on and take everything that’s on the news verbatim which isn’t always a good thing.
There are times when the news talks about things that aren’t entirely true and if these stories are seen enough times people will start to believe them. Danielle C. Polage actually did a study on this to see if repeated exposure to false information changes the way in which the information is perceived. At the end of the study she was able to conclude that “…exposure to false stories increased the perceived truthfulness of those stories” (248). Because the exposure increased the perceived truthfulness of the false stories, people are more likely to believe the false information.
This is true for many different scenarios, one of which being the presidential election. During the election both the democratic and republican parties created false advertisements about the other candidate to make their representative seem like the better choice. The information that was in these advertisements were repeated multiple times throughout the race to the presidency and because of this people started to believe the false accusations that were being made.
The repetition of false information is a major issue regarding what people believe when they go to the news for what they want to know. It prevents people from finding out what the truth is if they are unwilling to fact check what is being said in the stories. This causes the false information to spread, causing more people to blindly believe everything that they see thinking that it’s the truth when it’s really not.
